For more than 4000 years aniseed spice has been used to enhance the flavours of foods across the known world but it wasn’t until merchant ships in the 1600’s brought the spice to the kitchens of Amsterdam that it was combined with liquorice root and created one of the world’s most well known and loved sweets.
