Located in the Mirik Valley the Sungma tea gardens are one of the most picturesque of all the tea gardens in the world with views down into the Rung Bong. The word Sungma is derived from the Tibetan word Sanga Maru which roughly translates as 'the place where muchrooms grow wildly' as Darjeeling is not just the home of the worlds finest teas but also some of the best tasting muchrooms. Following the destruction of the Sungma tea factory and processing rooms caused by the 8.0 magnitude Bihar earthquake in 1934 the Sungma estate merged with the nearby Tarzun estate; a merger which still exists to this day.
The gardens are touched by heavy clouds with cool mountain air and washed by the pure mountain rain. Darjeeling Tea yields its highly sought subtle fragrance only in this climate. At daybreak the rays of the sun transform the mist to dew on the leaves and it is only at this time when the air is at its crispest that the workers who so lovingly tend to the trees all year long will pluck the young leaves to do so at any other time would ruin the final flavour.
